— About this chord
E11 (1–♭7–11, with the 3rd usually omitted) is an airy, suspended-sounding dominant chord where the 11th takes center stage, giving it a wide-open, gospel-and-funk vamp quality. It's a staple of funk and gospel keyboard-and-guitar comping and turns up often in jazz-fusion grooves as a static, ambiguous color chord. On guitar it can be played as a simple open-position grip or as a full movable barre shape across the middle strings. Functionally it works as a suspended dominant that can sit for bars at a time without needing to resolve, ideal for vamps and grooves. Also searched as Edom11, E9sus4, E7add11.
