A11 (1-b7-9-11, 3rd usually omitted) has a suspended, floating quality that blurs major and minor — funky and unresolved, closer to a rich sus chord than a plain dominant. A staple of gospel-tinged funk, fusion vamps, and modal jazz comping, it works beautifully as a static groove chord that never quite wants to resolve.
