— About this chord
D11 (1–♭7–11, with 3, 5, and 9 often omitted or implied) trades the clashing major 3rd for a wide, open 11th, giving it a suspended, gospel-choir warmth rather than dominant grit. Common in funk horn stabs and gospel keyboard voicings, it works equally well strummed on guitar as a bright, ringing chord. On guitar it favors an A-string-root shape with the 9th and 11th chiming on top, and drops easily into open position using ringing open strings. Functionally it often stands in for a plain dominant 7th or sus4 chord, adding a floating, unresolved quality well suited to extended vamps and call-and-response grooves. Also searched as Ddom11.
