— About this chord
E7b5 (1–3–♭5–♭7) is a slippery, tritone-flavored dominant chord with a shadowy, off-balance color from its flatted fifth. It's a jazz staple used in turnarounds and substitute-dominant progressions, often standing in for a tritone-related dominant, and adds bebop-era sophistication to blues and swing. On guitar it's a compact, movable grip that works equally well in open position. Functionally it resolves to A or Am with a smooth, chromatic pull, and pairs naturally with tritone substitution. Also searched as Edom7b5, E7(b5), E7-5.
