— About this chord
D13 (1–3–♭7–13, with 5 and 9 implied) is the richest dominant color in the jazz and blues vocabulary, stacking a bright 13th over the dominant 7th for a lush, horn-section-like sound. Common in jazz turnarounds, funk vamps, and blues shuffles, it substitutes freely for a plain D7 wherever extra shimmer is wanted. On guitar it favors compact shell voicings with the root on the A string and the 13th ringing on top. Functionally it remains a strong V chord, pulling powerfully toward the tonic while adding sophistication to comping and horn-style arranging. Also searched as Ddom13 or D dominant 13.
