— About this chord

F#7♭9 (1–3–♭7–♭9) is a tense, altered dominant chord prized in jazz and Latin styles for the diminished-symmetry tension the flatted 9th adds above the dominant 7th. It resolves powerfully to B or Bm, making it a favorite in ii-V-I turnarounds and flamenco-tinged progressions. On guitar the shape mirrors a diminished-7 stacked over the root, giving fast, symmetrical fingerings that slide easily around the neck without changing shape. Functionally it heightens the pull of a dominant chord, common in bebop heads and minor-key cadences where extra bite is wanted before resolution. Also searched as F#dom7b9, Gb7b9, or G♭7b9.
