— About this chord

D7♭9 (1–3–♭7–♭9) is a tense, altered dominant chord prized in jazz and Latin styles for the diminished-symmetry tension the flatted 9th adds above the dominant 7th. It resolves powerfully to G or Gm, making it a favorite in ii-V-I turnarounds and flamenco-tinged progressions. On guitar the shape mirrors a diminished-7 stacked over the root, giving fast, symmetrical fingerings that move easily around the neck. Functionally it heightens the pull of a dominant chord, common in bebop heads and minor-key cadences where extra bite is wanted before resolution. Also searched as Ddom7b9.
