— About this chord
Em11 (1–♭3–5–♭7–9–11) is a lush, open, modal-sounding chord that stacks a minor 7th with a suspended 4th/11th on top for a floating, neo-soul texture. It's a favorite of D'Angelo-and Robert Glasper-style R&B and neo-soul, and works beautifully as a static vamp chord in jazz-fusion grooves. On guitar it can be played by simply letting all six open strings ring, or as a movable barre shape anywhere on the neck. Functionally it's a rich substitute for a plain minor chord, adding color without needing resolution, great for extended vamps and modal grooves. Also searched as Emin11, Em7add11, Em9sus4.
