— About this chord
D6/9 (1–3–5–6–9) is a shimmering, unresolved major chord favored in bossa nova and jazz comping for its bright, floating quality that never quite settles into a plain major triad. Popularized by João Gilberto-style rhythm guitar, it also closes out jazz standards and lounge ballads with a sophisticated, "last chord of the night" feel. On guitar it sits naturally in open position with both the 6th and 9th ringing among the top strings, and moves cleanly as a compact movable shape further up the neck. Functionally it works as a static tonic color, often held over an entire vamp instead of resolving anywhere. Also known as Dmaj6/9 or D6add9.
