— About this chord
FmMaj7 (1-♭3-5-7) fuses a dark minor third with a bright major seventh for an eerie, suspenseful color that feels both tragic and glamorous at once. A favorite of film-noir scoring and jazz balladry, it's the classic "spy theme" chord, often used as the i chord in a minor key vamp or as a chromatic passing chord sliding between Fm7 and Fm6. On guitar it's commonly fingered as an open-ish shape near the nut, or moved up the neck as a compact movable grip with the root on the low E or A string. Frequently heard in melodic-minor jazz harmony and moody chord-melody arrangements. Also searched as Fm(maj7) or F minor-major seventh.
