— About this chord
D7#9 (1–3–♭7–♯9), the famous "Hendrix chord," clashes a sharpened 9th against the major 3rd for a gritty, funky dissonance that sounds simultaneously major and minor. A cornerstone of funk rhythm guitar and blues-rock lead-ins, it is instantly recognizable from psychedelic rock riffs and horn-driven funk vamps. On guitar it takes a compact, muscular shape with the root on the A string, easily barred and moved chromatically for quick key changes. Functionally it works as a spicy dominant substitute anywhere a D7 would sit, adding attitude to turnarounds and song intros. Also searched as Ddom7#9 or D7sharp9.
